John W. Backus has died

A true giant of the field of Computer Science, John W. Backus, has died, 82 years old.

  1. Programming languages and their compilers have always been a favorite area of study and work for me, and Backus was certainly one of the great people in the field.

    (Felt I had to leave a comment in his memory. I doubt if anyone outside of the computing community has ever heard of him.)

  2. Yes Backus was one of the greats, and while I agree that it's unlikely that many people outside the computing community have heard about him, I doubt that many inside the community haven't heard about him - if nothing else then because of BNF.
